When Should You Renew Your Card?
Understanding your renewal timeline helps ensure uninterrupted dispensary access across Ohio.
Renew Before Expiration
Ohio patients should generally complete their renewal evaluation before their current registration expires. Completing your physician renewal evaluation early helps avoid an interruption in your medical cannabis registration and dispensary access.
Plan Ahead Within Your Window
Physicians can typically enter a renewal recommendation into the state registry up to 45 days before your current recommendation expires. Scheduling your evaluation within this window ensures your updated recommendation is ready when you submit your state renewal.
If Your Recommendation Has Expired
If your medical cannabis recommendation has expired, a new physician recommendation is required before you can complete the state registration renewal process in the Patient & Caregiver Registry.
What to Know Before Renewing
Clear facts on annual physician visits, 90-day recommendation periods, and lapsed registrations under Ohio rules.
Annual Physician Evaluation vs. 90-Day Recommendation Periods
Ohio patients generally need to be evaluated by their physician at least once each year for continuation of the medical cannabis recommendation. Within the state registry, a physician's recommendation may be structured in 90-day periods or refills across the year. This does NOT mean that every patient must complete a new physician appointment every 90 days. You only need to schedule an annual physician renewal evaluation once per year unless your physician requests a separate follow-up for clinical reasons.
Renewing an Expired Medical Cannabis Recommendation
If your medical cannabis recommendation has expired, you will need a new recommendation from an Ohio physician before completing the state registration renewal process. Having an expired card does not mean you must start over from scratch as a brand new patient. Once the new recommendation is available in the Ohio Patient & Caregiver Registry, you can log in and follow the Registry prompts by selecting 'RENEW CARD' to renew your patient registration.
